An online petition being circulated calling for the resignation of Winter Springs’ Mayor Kevin McCann and Commissioners Matt Benton, Rob Elliot and Ted Johnson, has been signed by more than 1,000 residents. The petition cites nine causes related to recent investigations and audits, and has sustained momentum as the city downplayed the auditors’ findings and moved to drastically increase utility rates (trash and water).
Statement from Jesse Phillips, President of Winter Springs Community Association:
“The residents of Winter Springs are boldly proclaiming enough is enough. The auditor’s citation of an erosion of public trust has produced a groundswell never before seen in the history of Winter Springs. The contempt city leadership has shown toward the audits and their brazen attempts to push through drastic increases to our trash and water utility rates has left many residents feeling an immediate leadership change is needed before irreversible damage is done, and the next election may be too late. The Mayor and three Commissioners should do what the city manager, deputy city manager, finance director and others have recently done and tender resignations immediately.”
Additional info:
- The petitions have been signed by residents from every precinct in the city living on 380 of Winter Springs streets, covering more than 60% of the total residential streets in the city.
- Communities in Tuscawilla and the Highlands comprised of many residents on retirement income, which stand to be the most impacted by the steep utility increases, represented the largest percentage of signatories (66% of signatures were residents 55 and older).
